Hey Alo!

As you can see, my e-mail address has changed and I want to see if you will grant access to this lowly civilian. Things are going fine, another month left in school, I'm interviewing with Northrop-Grumman Ship Systems next week, wish me luck. Hopefully in a couple of months I'll have another home address to send you. The new site looks great! Take care.

Alo,

Nice to see the class web site back in operation!!! Looks like there have been quite a few changes. What's the deal? What happened to all the other stuf that used to be on there (reading recomendaitons, class roster, etc.)?? Will those items return?

How are things with you? Stil working on your JD? I'm planning on starting on mine this fall. I'm getting out this summer (24 JUL). I've applied to a dozen schools for the full-time program and am waiting to hear back.

Let me know how things are going.

Just another day at the office (if you're in the CG, you won't learn much by reading this) ...

One of our units, Station Destin (FL), has had the 47' Motor Lifeboat Standardization Team on board for the last couple days. The "Stan Team" is evaluating the station on their procedures, training, maintenance, etc. Since the team is a HQ unit, we from the Group always observe the drills. A night or two in Destin on the government during Spring Break -- it's a tough job, but someone has to do it. Let's see ... I could be doing this, or I could be in a foxhole in Afghanistan ...

The 47' MLB is the larger boat doing the towing. The boat being towed is the 41' Utility Boat, this particular one built in 1979. We just got the 47 last year--it's brand new and totally modern. It's a lot of boat, better than most of our coxswains. It'll roll over 360° and come back up. Not without problems, but it will keep the crew alive in heavy weather. "In the unlikely event the cabin were to [fill with water]," the windows would shoot off to give them an egress route. Actually I think it's because of the cabin's watertight integrity that the boat needs a system to blow the windows off against the force of the water pushing in, say if it were going down. Station Destin lost a 41' UTB with all hands in Destin Pass some years ago, which closes from time to time due to heavy surf. So they were an obvious choice to receive one of the new heavy weather boats.

Hello everyone!

Hope this finds you well.  I am writing primarily to let you know that my e-mail address has changed to caferacer@comcast.net.  Another casualty of the @home shake-up.  They say the service will be better--those are good odds if you're a gambler; it could hardly go down--but if anyone can find a way to downgrade service, it would be comcast.  Enough of the @home ad-hominem for now.

While I've got you on the line, I'll give you a quick update.  I've just returned from a 2-week course in facility security in Kentucky, where I also hooked up with a CGA classmate now working in the private sector.  He was recently married, so I joined him and his wife on a house-hunting expedition.  While I was at Lockmasters Security Institute, I learned how to pick those real-estate brokers' locks, so let me know if there's a house you have in mind...  Just kidding.  We only went in the ones that were open.

Weather was frigid and nasty when I left--it's hot, humid, and nasty now that I've returned.  Looking forward to those purportedly mild &  beautiful springs they enjoy here.

Well, I'm off to look at some plants for my still-pretty-new house, and some security hardware for my doors that I learned about in school.  Here's some tips to improve your home security:

  • If you have the ubiquitous kwikset locks, make sure you have & use deadbolts on anything you want pretty secure.  The doorknob lock can be removed in about 10 seconds with a keyblank and pliers or a neato special tool that runs about $70.  Then it can be put back on without damage.  It's only held in by two pieces of spring steel.
  • Make sure you always extend the deadbolt the full travel until it is locked in place.  Otherwise it can be more easily manipulated from the outside.
  • Make sure the metal plates in your door jambs are fastened with 3" screws all the way to the stud.  Some contractors use only the 3/4" screws, which only attach to the trim.  They can be kicked in without much effort.
  • You can buy a brass plate to fit around your door knobs and deadbolts to make it harder to kick the door in.
  • You can buy metal lips that help prevent the door jambs from being spread outside the locking area with a car jack.
  • You can buy an invisible polyester film to prevent your windows from shattering due to attack or bad weather: http://www.shattergard.com.

Here endeth the lesson!

Have a great week!

Hey Alo,

Thanks for keeping up this website and hope you had a great Holiday season.

Don't know if you got my previous e-mail before the holidays, but I was wondering if you have any contacts at GE Lighting in Cleveland through family or friends? I am trying to do the networking thing to get an Engineering type job out there to be co-located with my girlfriend. If not, that's cool.

Also, what do I use for the user name and password for the class roster now?

I just heard back from Jay Main and Suzanne who just got back from a Caribbean cruise.

Hope things are going well for you at Case Western.

Take care,
Brandon

Alo! Awesome job with the website. I have found a few of your MIAs (myself included.) I'm currently at Group Honolulu as Deputy; got married, no kids (I have to raise my husband first :) Christina Deleon is a D14 JRCC controller; married and due any day now. Lara Allison is at graduate school at Indiana University. She's married and just had a baby. Stephanie Pendergrass is married (now Santos) and living outside Seattle. She has 2 adorable little boys. Desi Atnip is the D14 Public Affairs officer. Brendon Ritz is a Reserve LT controller at D14 JRCC. He and Marine helicopter wife Erin just had a little girl (Grace Leilani). Big brother Gannon is very proud. I'll check in every once in a while. Great job!

Thanks for all your hard work,

To the Class of 94,

There are some great engineering positions available at the engineering firm I work for. The engineering firm is called Dewberry & Davis. The company's headquarters is in Northern Virginia and is involved with Architecture/Building Design, Building Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Design-Build, Environmental, Geodigital, Geoenvironmental, Geotechnical, Interior Design, Land Development, Landscape Architecture, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Planning, Project Management, Solid Waste Management, Surveying, Water Resources Planning and Engineering, Water and Wastewater Treatment Engineering and Wireless and Telecommunications Infrastructure.

The company is looking for ex-CGA officers for various engineering positions and they asked me to track down some other officers that are getting out or have been out.

I departed the Coast Guard as a LT last June and started work as a project manager in the environmental department. The department is expanding into the facilities engineering arena which is what they hired me for. The company is great and I enjoy the challenging projects.

If you are interested or know of anyone else that is interested from your class or another, then send me a resume. Take a look at the company's website www.dewberry.com and then give me a call. By the way....the pay and benefits aren't bad also.

Hello Everyone,

Since Megan and Ken Backes just had a brand new baby girl (name Madison for those that didn't know...more to follow) and have their hands a little full, I finally broke down and decided to help with the class notes. Hopefully Laura will help as well. I have to send them in to the editor by Oct 20th, so if you have any info you would like to share please send it in.

Thanks. We look forward to your replies.

What ups everyone? I hope this email finds every one in good health. I imagine everyone that is still in will be really busy for awhile. I was driving by the Pentagon last week and I saw the "crash site". TV does not do justice to the size of the gash in the side of the Pentagon. Thank goodness the hijackers hit the bomb hardened side of the Pentagon.

Hey Alo, how's it going? I haven't been too social lately, but great job on trying to keep the class together and informed.

I just switched jobs, as you can see, and am now in sunny (not!) Astoria, OR. A couple of observations from your roster. I didn't see John Pruitt's name on there. He is now OPS on the BOUTWELL. I saw him at P-OPS school, and actually talked to him on the radio a couple of times while we were both bobbing out in the middle of the Pacific. Also, I noticed you have Cathy Gross as MIA and a civilian. The last I heard, she was a BM1. Pretty weird, huh? Anyway, I hope all is going well for you. Keep up the good work!

Peace,
Dan

Congrats to my fellow Coasties on your new home!!!

In case you missed it (?!), the President tonight created the Office of Homeland Security, an idea many years old and long overdue.

The Coast Guard will step out from the "M" umbrella and get back to its core missions of guarding the coast, securing the ports, saving lives, and enforcing the law. For the non-coasties receiving this, "M" is the USCG abbreviation for the marine safety component of our service. Marine Safety deals primarily with the maritime transportation system, which was likely the prime mover that landed us in the Transportation Dept in the 60s. One famous M-derived commandant asked why our boarding teams fighting the drug smugglers needed to carry weapons. He was successful in disarming the marine safety inspectors and investigators -- until just this week, when the amnesia was cured and their port security functions came back to the forefront.

To everyone I've addressed who does not wear the Coast Guard uniform, support this change at every opportunity -- in your place of business, at the dinner table, and at church. This change will restructure the government to more effectively respond to today's threats.

Congress opens hearings tomorrow, and Senator Lieberman says this will go forward (I knew there was a good reason to keep him in the Senate) -- it's only a matter of working out the details. Personally, I wouldn't mind if some functions (aids to navigation, marine inspection) were civilianized. The rest of the service will sharpen their focus on the task of defending our homeland. This is a good day. The first day on the road to Victory.

Alo, in light of recent events, I think our class should endeavor to account for all our members. I have info from Chase Landon that Rick Baumgartner was in the Pentagon at the time and made it out okay. Darren Eicken was at work in Lower Manhattan and saw everything. Work and life have been adversely affected but he is alive and well.

I know we have many classmates that have since moved on and am concerned that some of them may have been on the planes hijacked or inside the buildings hit by them.

Let us pray that all of our friends and classmates emerge from this unhurt.

Survived another Mardi Gras! It was the first one for my wife Jennifer. She was amazed at the masses of people and how nutty they get for cheap beads!! We rode on the CG float in Bacchus this year! It was awesome!

We also saw some classmates who passed through for Mardi Gras. I saw Jason Swim, who is now a financial planner for Fidelity in Ohio. His wife is finishing up med school and they are both doing well! Jason has a big beard and looks a lot like Ted Kazcynski (Unabomber). I also saw Kirk & Michelle Kinder. Kirk works for the Motley Fool and is loving it.

I also saw Darren Eicken (blast from the past!). Darren is now a tax attorney with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in NYC. He got his master's in tax law a year ago from NYU (No.1 in the U.S. for tax law according to U.S. News & World Reports). He bills out at $500 an hour and is making apprx $120K a year! How's that for a comeback story!?! He is really doing well for himself and has come a long way since leaving the Factory.

Hope the rest of '94 is doing well and encourage you all to visit and post on the class website and let your classmates know what you are up to!

Regards,
Sharif

Hello Alo

Sorry to be terse (I know you lawyer types like words that noone else in this world uses everyday) yesterday, but I had drill down flash-backs when I tried  to remember the commandant's name.  Anyway, I'm alive and well living in Memphis, TN.  I'm married, have a house and four dogs--no kids yet.  (Tina and I are that weird demographic that have dogs first so we don't screw up our first child too badly)  I've gone back to school seeking a mechanical engineering degree--my first degree was in human resources, business is evil--and should graduate in the spring of '02.  Our address is ...

Chris & Tina Fritz
722 Watson Street
Memphis TN 38111
(901) 452-3147

All is well and we should be in Memphis until '04, then we're headed for the coast (Gulf) to collect more degrees and build our home.

[Alo's note:  All's well, and Christmas was great!  Thanks for asking.]

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a couple of updates on your roster.  Brent Durbin is actually IN the Coast Guard.  He is a LTJG who works at Atlantic Area (Aow).  James Houck is the XO on the USCGC ELM in North Carolina.  Kevin Chandler is out.  Last I heard, he was getting his MBA at Columbia.  Strphen Van Essendelft is also out and is a civilian working for an engineering firm at Virginia Beach.  And Dan Ostergaard works at COMDT (G-IPA) but will probably be getting out in September.

Hey, Alo!  Hope all is going well for you - the site looks great.  I was just scanning through your M.I.A.'s, and I don't have much, but:

Not listed MIA, but Mike Barner JUST moved to CEU Providence, RI (he might not have even reported in yet).  The e-mail address probably will not change.

Matt Smith got out right at the 5-year point.  I'm not sure where he went (maybe back to South Dakota), but he called me on his last day to say hi, or perhaps goodbye.

I'm pretty certain that George Grills went off to grad school for marine engineering.  I talked with him at Hampton Roads, and later I saw he was selected.  No idea where he went though...maybe Michigan like some others did.

Rob Keister went to UConn to be a CGA Chemistry Instructor and should be finishing this summer.  I don't know what Beth is doing.

Anyway, I don't hear much, but I thought maybe this little bit might help.  Happy New Year!

OK, folks, here are a few odds and ends for your consideration.  First up is "The Curse of Can-Do " by Anne Laurent of GovExec.com, who says "... the Coast Guard has been compared to a Swiss Army knife. But after decades of accepting new missions without receiving requested resources, the Coast Guard is losing its edge."

Next, an item about protecting yourself from e-commerce fraud entitled "Credit card fraud - it was easy " by Bob Sullivan at MSNBC (who says not to use a debit card online, for example).

Last, I've decided to make free cga94.com e-mail addresses available to you.  Just go to the roster page to sign up.

Alo,

I can solve some of the MIA's.

Mark Golden is in Denver, CO and out.  His email is [see roster page] .

Dan Ostergaard is at HQ.  His email is [see roster page] .

Stacey P. is OPS on Northland.  I don't have an email for her.

Mike Hursta is getting his MBA at Cal Berkeley.  He is out and his email is [see roster page] .

Shawn Slayton is getting his MBA at UC Irvine and of course is out.  His email is [see roster page] .

Chris Carter is at HQ.  His email though is [see roster page] .

Clive Duesbury is in the British Royal Navy on the HMS Illustrious (ac carrier).  His email is [see roster page] .  He plans on getting out in the next year and is engaged to a Mexican girl.  Their wedding will be in Jul 01.

Hope all is well.

Remember last year's fuss over Article 88 of the UCMJ? Looks like Algore & Wilhelm von der Shlickmeister do, and the press is noticing how we military types don't like our Perpetrator-in-Chief's truth-challenged sidekick. Boy am I glad I'm retired.

Greg Magee was quoted in a recent Military.com article about Coast Guard SWAT-type training.

Fighting Violent Migrants
Coast Guard Interdiction Teams Adapt With Non-Lethal Weapons, Crowd Control, Body Armor
By Stephen Trimble
Military.com Staff Writer

WASHINGTON (Nov. 21, 2000) -- Facing a rising threat of machete-wielding, spear-throwing migrants floating towards U.S. shores, some Coast Guard crews soon may be equipped like SWAT teams and trained like Marines.

Adapting new forms of self-protection gear, non-lethal weapons and crowd control tactics to the Coast Guard's watery needs is the focus of a new task force known as Project Ericson, said Lt. Greg Magee, a migrant interdiction specialist at the agency's headquarters here.

The project's staff is canvassing military units, including Marine Corps non-lethal weapons experts, and police SWAT teams for tips, he said, and ultimately hopes to open an internal think tank on such topics. Project Ericson's staff also is working with the Pentagon's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, he said.

Crowd Control on the Water

"There is a lot of equipment out there," Magee said, but the Coast Guard's challenge is to learn how it can be adapted for use on the ocean.

Some conventional forms of crowd control are useless on boats, he said. Firing sticky foam onboard a vessel, for example, might paralyze a violent crowd, but also would render them unable to swim if they fell overboard.

The aim of the project, named after a Coast Guard aviation pioneer, is to counter a spiraling trend of violence toward the agency's boarding teams patrolling for illegal migrants off Florida and California.

In early June, one Coast Guard interdiction team was doused with gasoline as it boarded a homemade raft off the Florida coast. Others have faced migrants flailing spear-tipped bamboo poles, oars, rocks and machetes.

The New Professional Smuggler

Agency leaders suspect the escalating violence is due to the emergence in Cuba and China of a new industry of professional smugglers who would rather risk their living cargoes' lives than face arrest, Magee said.

Against such new threats, he said, Coast Guard crews are woefully ill equipped. A typical boarding team wears only bulletproof vests, exposing their arms, legs and head, he said. And a team is armed only with short-range pepper spray, handguns and rifles, which can be used only in extreme situations.

What Project Ericson seeks is body-length protective gear and non-lethal weapons that can be used at between 10 and 20 feet, he said.

"Smugglers are very adaptive to our tactics," Magee said, "so we have to be adaptive as well."

My wife and I just moved into our new house in Friendswood, TX in the Clear Lake area near NASA. A very nice, quiet area except for the heat, humidity, and mosquitos, but that's life in Texas. I hope everybody is doing well in the class. Good to hear that our foreign exchange students are doing well overseas. Hi, Kasem and Azhar. Whatever happened to Roberto Mendoza? Norman Chang-Diaz? Anybody know because I was curious how those fellas are doing too.

Alo,

I have never submitted any input to your page except to update my roster information. This should probably go under the forum section, but I am unable to currently access that section for whatever reason. The current way the passover system for the DOD and CG has made me mad enough to write letters to my state senators and congressmen. I encourage you to also write your congressmen and senators, if you do not like the system. We continue to kick out people that want to stay in the service when normal attrition (8%) would take care of the problem. The federal mandates require us to kick out people based on a percentage. I believe this should be changed that allows the selection board the ability to pick out members that are not fit for service. Selections boards kick out people that may have had one minor mistake/comment on an OER or may even have a spotless record.

Taxpayers spend thousands on recruiting to entice people to join the service only to have them leave because they do not like it. Why not keep the people that do a good job and are dedicated to the service. When I was stationed in Norfolk, I served with Navy O-3 pilots that had been passed over for O-4 and were going to school at night to get their MBAs. They were due to graduate in June and had commercial jobs lined up. Then Kosovo happened and they were not allowed to leave the service until after the conflict. They were sent overseas, not promoted, they had to drop their classes and forego their civilian jobs until after the conflict.

Basically the service is saying we need you to fight for your country but we do not think you are good enough to be promoted. We all probably have similar stories and situations, about friends and classmates that have been passed over. Not sure if we can change the system but I think it is worth my effort.

Thanks
Ric Boston

Lori and I were released from HQ in June... Promptly grew a beard as a rookie civilian. We spent some time with family in the Midwest this past summer and I also took a backpacking and rock climbing course for outdoor educators with the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming. Currently living in Holland, MI: I'm teaching high school zoology, botony, and personal computing classes as a first year teacher, while Lori is working as a project manager at a local environmental consulting firm.

Drop us an e-mail if you need more info. We hope to close on our house on August 31, 2000.

Alo,
The Class web site looks great. Thanks for your continuing hard work. It is unfortunate that the forum is not as lively as in past years. Have you talked to Kenny about having him email you the class notes from the bulletin every month for inclusion on this site? I think it would help gather some interest from classmates that are not in the alumni association anymore (or never were).
Also, here's a jpg of my complete family , we added another son November 1st, Gradey Robert.

Alo,

I just got a promotion. Could you please update my job title at Medical Automation Systems to: Senior Systems Engineer. I am serving as an internal consultant to the company working with both the sales divisions and the development team on the mission of the company. We bring new data management tools to market for Point of Care Testing within hospitals all over the country.

The job includes a lot of travel but I am having a great time. I was in San Francisco earlier this week, Phoenix now; next week, Jackson, MI, Charlottesville, VA, and Boston. After that, New Orleans for a week. I am working on a bunch of cool projects including a new consulting division within the company.

Anyway, that's the quick news from here... oh, yeah settlement on a house at the end of June.

Hope this message finds you well. Let me know how you are doing. We missed you at Rick's party.

Regards,

Chris

Alo-

The web site is still looking great!

I met up with George Grills - he's not MIA... Still at MSO Hampton Roads in CVS - I bet ggrills@msohamptonroads.uscg.mil would work.

Also, I know someone who ran into Arex Signey at Port Ops School in Yorktown - he changed his name to Arex Avanni when he got married...apparently 1/2 his name, 1/2 her name. I think this person told me he was at MSO Morgan City now.

I saw James Houck very briefly at Yorktown the other week - tried to catch up with him later but kept missing him. He was apparently pipelining into a 180' XO job, and I think he told me it was the COWSLIP...

Oh, George told me John Mickett is also at MSO Hampton Roads, but he is getting out of the CG very soon to go to some RA position at the U of Washington (State) for Marine Science...

I also know Rich Sundland is at D8 in the planning section - haven't actually spoken with him, but he has been POC on a few things.

Oh yeah - I also just met a pilot at AIRSTA Clearwater that said Sean Cross, Chris Conley, and I think Mark Vislay are all H-60 pilots there!

I had no idea how much I knew!

Just trying to help - guess I should have been paying more attention when all of these people were telling me things!!.

Later! -Anthony :-)

I am planning a party for our Class that is located in the DC area on the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend. If you are not local, you are still invited. The invite is to anyone who was either present for the group picture on July 9th, 1990 or who walked across the graduation stage on May 18th, 1994 or anybody in between that was ever a member of the Class of '94. You may bring a date/spouse and/or your children (if applicable). I want to limit it to these parameters because there are plenty of boneheads in other classes that many of us don't like. If, however, your date/spouse falls into this category, they are exempt from the last rule and are still invited. The tenative date for this party is May 22, 1999 from noon-????. It will be at Lake Montclair in my development about 30 minutes south of DC in Virginia.

This party/get-together/cookout/drink-up/wrestling match/whatever is to commemorate our end of commitment time/5 yr reunion/getting out/wetting down/drying up/whatever. The lake is very clean and pretty big (i.e. 2 square miles). Swimming, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Fishing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Rowing (BYOB...Bring your own Boat) No motorized vessels except pontoon boats with trolling motors. There is also a nice little playground for the youngsters or the really, really drunk folk. There is a Holiday Inn Express and an Econolodge 2 miles down the road if you're interested in staying overnight.

If you are interested in attending, RSVP ASAP or else I'll have 3 and 30s for all No-Fo Rangers on the floating diving platform. Ah yes, I remember it fondly...Pat Smith during swab summer..."If you're early, You're on time. If you're on time, You're late. If you're late, You're screwed!". Well same applies here. RSVP by April 30th. I would prefer responses sooner but I know our classmates..."If you wait till the last minute, it only takes a minute"

Bomber

P.S. I'm sure I missed plenty of people. Sorry! Please forward to any classmates I missed.

About two weeks ago, I sent you all an e-mail recommending that your respective websites establish a section for "Job Opportunities" that would allow CGA grads to "post" contacts at civilian companies who could help other CGA grads find positions. I hope you are interested in the concept.

The forwarded e-mail is another Company interested in CGA grads. Please post the information provided if you do establish the "Job Opportunities" section. Just wondering if Bob wouldn't have preferred a memorial donation to cancer research instead of a fountain or wall with his name on it? This is a thank-you note to you, my classmates. Since I broke my neck in August, I've been overwhelmed by the kindness and support you folks have shown me and my family. You've offered prayers, sent cards and pictures, called to wish me well, flooded my inbox with "get well" e-mail messages, and you've even come to visit me in the hospital and at home.

One of the most wonderful and uplifting things to happen since my accident was a visit from a singing quartet of USCGA Idlers. They performed for me, my family, and the patients in the Spinal Cord Injury unit (which, until recently, was my "home"). Their visit brought me great joy, and I'm sure it brightened the lives of the patients. Now, I'm not sure whether y'all know it or not, but that visit was entirely paid for by our Class of '94 fund ... paid for by you. So please accept my heartfelt thanks for your kindness. It was truly touching.

Any time you folks happen to find yourselves passing through the Cleveland area, please consider dropping in for a meal, a free bed to sleep in, or just a short visit to pass the time.

I'm reminded of something Jesus once said about showing kindness to others:

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Matthew 25:34-40

God bless you.

[Alo's Note: There's some more info about this on the TROA web site, but it may not be there for long]

As you may already know, Dan Ostergaard married Sarah on Jan 02, up at the Conn College Chapel. His brother was the best man, and Howard Wright and myself were groomsmen. We were also swordbearers, along with Rick Tipton, Pat Knowles (91) Sam Stevens (96?), and one of Dan's Army buddies from Hawaii whose name escapes me (Shelly something or other). Eric "Darth" Bader was also able to make it. The reception afterwards was held at the Officer's Club over at USCGA. All in all, it was a first class shindig. After the reception, the young couple went off to the Caribbean for a week or two of island hopping in a sailboat. On a side note, while I was up there, I stayed at the officer's Quarters in Chase Hall. I was the only person in the whole building, so it got kind of spooky from time to time (Ever see "The Shining?")

[Alo's Note: All work and no play makes Jeff a dull boy ...]

About a week after I returned from New London, I headed off to Tampa to play with the Coast Guard Rugby Team in the Interservice Championships. We came in fourth place this year, ahead of the Navy. Our biggest problem was lack of players (again), but it was really fun. I returned from the tournament scarred for life. I spit my forehead open in our game against the Marine Corps, that took 13 stitches to close. Once again, quite a few familiar faces were in attendance. From here in Norfolk, Ric Boston and Ann Zearfoss were in attendance. Mike Brandhuber came over from Hawaii, Richard Fraterelli came over from New Orleans. From Miami we had Tory Cobb, Rick Horner (91) and Jerry Saddler (96). Mark Vislay made an appearance on the sidelines. I tried to talk him in to playing, but he declined (Maybe it was the scar that scared him off).

Anyway, that is about all from the greater Hampton Roads area.

Take care!
~ Jeff

As most of you have probably heard by now, Bob Beers recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. Tom Hubble tells me that Kenny Backes and Tanya Schneider are looking for ideas for a memorial dedication to the Academy in Bobby's name. I'm also putting together a Dedication Page, so send me your ideas & pictures, please.

The Fisher House (where Bob's parents stayed at in Bethesda) is going to erect and dedicate a fountain in his memory. Donations can be sent to:

Fisher House Foundation
For Bethesda Fisher House
24 Stokes Road
Bethesda, MD 20814-5002

Ensure that "In Memory of Bob Beers" is put on the check so that the money isn't put into the general pot and is used for Bob's fountain.

On to a different topic. If you're still in the Coast Guard, read this article before you sound off on politics. Boy, am I glad I'm retiring soon ... this Article 88 muzzle is beginning to chafe.

Greetings from the Tidewater Area. Definitely won't catch everyone in this area and apologize if I
inadvertently left you out...

 - Mark Moland - ATON with LANTAREA - What's up Mark?
 - Dan Ostergaard - Cutter Branch (Aofc) - a recent addition to the staff. We have already successfully completed two very large pah-tays with Dan and soon to be Mrs. (Sarah). The detailer had to break Dan's finger to release his death grip on his little island down in Hawaii. Last we heard they are still throwing sacrifices into the volcano and chanting "King Dan" until he returns.

 - Pati Tate (now Pati Kutch) - very recently married and just arrived to the LANTArea Command Center - Welcome Aboard!
 - Vern Kipp - recent addition to the Aooa branch
 - Rusty Dash - moving up out of the basement from TACLET North LEDET OIC to LANTAREA (Aod).  Welcome to the world of staff pukes... Danielle moved on from LANTAREA Intel into her next tour over at RTC Yorktown teaching international students. Danielle is also into her 3rd month of developing little Dash JR. Congrats!

 - Ric Boston and wife doing fine. Ric is working on his MBA while balancing MLC's books.
 - Jeff Whealton is running the personnel support division at MLCLANT
 - Jen Dugan recently moved up to ISC Boston - Admin O while Pat is off at Grad School.
 - Ann Zearfoss - saw Ann briefly during Harborfest 98 in Norfolk. Currently keeping everyone in line in the vr shop at MLCLANT.

 - George Grills at the mighty MSO Hampton Roads also busy crewing during his free time

During the last pow wow at Dan's, ran into the following classmates:

 - Tim Haws - Tim is crawling around down in the weeds of Peru with the IMLET program
 - Cale Smith is finishing up his last year with RTC and has almost completed his MBA.
 - John Pruitt - starting his new tour at C2CEN at ISC Portsmouth

Megan Backes made a surprise visit during Hurricane George's wrath of fury - came up to LANTAREA Opcen to run the D7 CAC in the event that George decided to take out Miami. Megan is doing great and passed that Ken is also working on finishing his MBA and doing a little consulting work on the side (probably makin' a lot more money than some of us!!)

Speaking of George's, Jorge Garrido recently took on the duties and responsibilities of Executive Officer Regional TACLET South (Miami, FL).

Eric Finger is wrapping up his last year as XO Regional TACLET Gulf in New Orleans, LA.

Jim Sutton is enjoying new tour up at G-OPL (CGHQ) after completing his LEDET OIC tour.

As for myself - finishing year #3 with LANTAREA and will pass the Port Security Unit torch to anyone who wants it next summer. Lots of fun but time to hit the road.

Just a comment about civilian life and the transition from the Military....  Despite the fact that many job applications inquire about whether you deserve verteran preferences, I have found through my experiences as well as some empiracle data that I reviewed, that veteran preference status has little or no effect as to getting a job in corporate America.  Please keep that in mind, as you prepare to leave the CG.

How is Alo?

I reported to Naval Postgraduate School last June.  I'm majoring in Information Technology Management.  Other than that nothing really interesting going on.  It's pretty cool that you were able to make a web site for the class I'm sure everyone appreciates it.

Thanks Anthony for your efforts in keeping our class "connected"!!

All is well in Baltimore.  I was at Marc Thibault's wedding last month.  It was a regular class reunion!!  A good time was had by all!

For those who are separating form service (or are even only considering it as an option), I recommend the following books:

1) The 1998 What Color Is Your Parachute?  by Richard Nelson Bolles.  This is an excellent text with lots of good strategies for career transitioners.  Since it's updated every year, the 1998 version is a must have.

2) How to Find Your Mission In Life  by Richard Nelson Bolles.  This is for those who are really lost as to what they might want to do next.

Also, the Defense Manpower Data Center publishes the Military Occupation Training Data Series, the Master Crosswalk File, and the Crosscode File.  These documents correlate most major military specialties/occupations with their civilian counterparts for both OFFICER and ENLISTED occupations, for those who might want to know what (if any) the civilian counterpart to their "specialty' is.  I' m trying to obtain copies of these documents.  If I am successful, I plan on somehow making them available for further distribution to anyone in the class who wants them.

Greg Magee was married to Christy Gronlund (Captain Gronlund- Science Dept, daughter) on Saturday 29 August at the Academy Chapel.  It was a blast.  Myself and Troy Berry were members of the wedding party.  Congratulations!!

I recently PCSd to C2CEN in Portsmouth, VA, on the ISC.  Right now I am residing in the bigger trailer park in the engineering training division.  Ah a desk...

I have received several updates on Alo's condition, and they change too much to post them all here.  From what I understand, he is doing very well considering, he did very well in surgery, and he has shown strong signs that he has the potential for a good recovery to his accident (see below).  Most of my updates came from Jim Sutton, and he has received them from Brian Norberg and John Walthall, both of whom have been able to visit with Alo.  I recommend that you e-mail one of these gentlemen, and I am certain they would be happy to send the updates your way as well.

Please keep Alo in your thoughts...

I finally found this page again.  I'm at a new unit now.  I'm at D13, as the Aide.   Also Jadon Klopson is the MLCPAC aide, Trevor George is at MSO Puget Sound, and Lisa Shultz is at ISC Seattle, just to add a few more.
Hope all is going well.  Thanks for taking on the class webmaster role.  Its amazing how easy it is to lose track of everyone, after only a few years.

FYI for anyone that has not heard...

Hope everyone is well.  Please keep Alo in your prayers.

Thanks

I know that I talked to a lot of you already, and that this list does not even begin to touch the people who need to know what is going on, but there is something that you need to be aware of.  Please pass this on to anyone you think of that I left off of the list.
Alo Konsen was in a diving accident yesterday morning.  He was in upstate NY vacationing with his dad and brothers.  They were horsing around on a pier next to the lake where they were staying, when he dove into a shallow pool.  He shattered the sixth vertebra below the brain stem in his spinal cord.  He is currently in critical but stable condition at St.
Elizabeth hospital in Utica, NY.
Alo is awake and coherent, asking and answering questions from his family and doctors.  He is able to move his arms and has partial movement of his fingers.  He is breathing normally without support from life-support equipment.  However, he is numb and unable to move from the chest down.  THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE IS PARALYZED, only that they are still evaluating the trauma to his spinal cord.  There is, according to his doctors, the possibility that it has been severed.  He is scheduled to go into surgery at 1200 EDT to remove bone fragments from around the spinal area and stabilize his spinal cord.  The procedure is expected to last approximately 4-6 hours.
Right now, however it turns out, Alo is going to be in some pretty intensive physical therapy once everything is said and done.  Tentatively, he is supposed to go to Berwith, VA, center outside of Cleveland, OH, once he can be transported.  I am going down to his apartment tonight to gather a few things for him, with plans to head up to NY first thing tomorrow morning.  As I get more information, I will continue to let you know.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers, and hope for his safe and swift recovery.

Very Respectfully,

Wally

Hi!  I put my resignation letter in already.  Has anyone else put their letter in yet?  Thought I'd beat the rush since I hear that many of our class want out.
